Breaking News: Michael Thomas Released by the Saints

Posted by | March 13, 2024.

In a stunning turn of events, the New Orleans Saints have announced the release of star wide receiver Michael Thomas. This move comes as a surprise to many fans and analysts alike, as Thomas has been a cornerstone of the Saints’ offense since being drafted in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Thomas, known for his incredible route-running ability and sure hands, quickly established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the league. In 2019, he set the NFL record for most receptions in a single season with an astounding 149 catches. His chemistry with future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees was undeniable, and he became a focal point of the Saints’ high-powered offense.

However, Thomas’ tenure in New Orleans has been marred by injuries and off-field issues in recent seasons. He missed the majority of the 2020 campaign due to an ankle injury that required surgery, limiting him to just seven games. Additionally, reports of friction between Thomas and the Saints coaching staff surfaced throughout the season, raising questions about his future with the team.

Despite speculation about Thomas’ potential trade or restructuring of his contract, the Saints ultimately decided to part ways with the talented wideout. The move signifies a significant shift in the team’s roster and offensive identity, as they transition to a new era following the retirement of Drew Brees after the 2020 season.

Thomas’ departure leaves a void in the Saints’ receiving corps and raises questions about who will step up to fill his shoes. While the team boasts promising young talent in players like Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris, Thomas’ absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field.

From a financial standpoint, Thomas’ release will have implications for the Saints’ salary cap situation. His contract, which included a significant amount of guaranteed money, will likely result in dead cap space for the team. However, the move provides some much-needed flexibility for the Saints as they navigate the challenges of the offseason.

As news of Thomas’ release spreads throughout the NFL community, speculation will undoubtedly swirl about his next landing spot. Despite his recent struggles, Thomas remains one of the most talented wide receivers in the league, and there will likely be no shortage of suitors vying for his services.

In the end, Michael Thomas’ departure from the New Orleans Saints marks the end of an era for both the player and the team. While his time in the Big Easy was filled with memorable moments and record-breaking performances, the business side of the NFL has dictated that it’s time for both parties to move on. As Thomas embarks on the next chapter of his career, Saints fans will look back fondly on his time in New Orleans and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Jameis Winston’s Departure from the Saints: A Shift in New Orleans’ Quarterback Landscape

Posted by | March 13, 2024.

In a surprising turn of events, quarterback Jameis Winston has decided to part ways with the New Orleans Saints heading to Cleveland to join the Browns organization. Leaving fans and football enthusiasts pondering the implications of this unexpected departure. Winston’s tenure with the Saints, though brief, had promised a potential resurgence for the former first overall draft pick. Let’s explore the circumstances surrounding Winston’s exit and the impact it may have on the Saints’ quarterback situation.

Winston’s Time in New Orleans:

Jameis Winston joined the New Orleans Saints in 2020 after spending the previous season as a backup quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His arrival in New Orleans raised eyebrows, as many speculated on the possibility of him succeeding future Hall of Famer Drew Brees, who retired after the 2020 season.

Winston showcased his talent during the 2021 season, taking the field when Brees was sidelined due to injury. In his limited opportunities, Winston demonstrated flashes of brilliance, but inconsistency and turnovers remained a concern. Nevertheless, there was optimism that under the guidance of head coach Sean Payton and the Saints’ coaching staff, Winston could refine his skills and become a reliable starting quarterback.

The Departure:

The decision for Winston to leave the Saints caught many off guard, especially considering the potential for him to step into the starting role in the post-Brees era. The specifics surrounding his departure remain unclear, but reports suggest that it may be tied to contract negotiations, the team’s future plans, or a desire for a fresh start elsewhere.

Impact on the Saints:

Winston’s departure leaves the New Orleans Saints with questions at the quarterback position. With Brees retired and Winston moving on, the team faces uncertainty regarding who will lead the offense in the upcoming season. The Saints may look to the draft, free agency, or explore internal options to find a suitable replacement.

This unexpected turn of events also emphasizes the competitive nature of the NFL, where roster changes can occur swiftly, reshaping the landscape of a team. It’s worth noting that the Saints have a history of successfully navigating quarterback transitions, and the organization may already have a plan in place to address this latest development.

What’s Next for Jameis Winston:

For Jameis Winston, leaving the Saints opens the door to new opportunities. Whether he seeks a starting role with another team or embraces a backup position with the potential for future growth, Winston’s departure could mark a pivotal moment in his career. The quarterback carousel in the NFL is ever-turning, and Winston may find himself in a situation that better aligns with his aspirations and skill set.

Jameis Winston’s departure from the New Orleans Saints adds an unexpected twist to the team’s offseason narrative. As the Saints regroup and strategize for the future, questions surrounding the quarterback position will undoubtedly dominate discussions. Meanwhile, Winston faces a pivotal juncture in his career, and his next destination will shape the trajectory of his NFL journey. The NFL offseason is notorious for surprises, and Winston’s departure serves as a reminder that change is the only constant in professional football.

Posted by | February 12, 2024.

The NFL is headed back to “The Big Easy” on Feb. 9, 2025. The Big Easy was supposed to host this year’s Super Bowl, and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said they swapped places with Las Vegas since the date was so close to Mardi Gras.

“Having Super Bowl and Mardi Gras on the same weekend would be almost impossible to handle,” he said.

Super Bowl 59 will be held in New Orleans and played at the Caesars Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints. It marks the first time New Orleans will host the Super Bowl since 2013 when the “lights went out”.

Saints hire 49ers’ Klint Kubiak as new offensive coordinator

Posted by | February 12, 2024.

Klint Kubiak wasn’t able to earn himself a Super Bowl ring with the San Francisco 49ers falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime on Sunday, but the coach has landed a new gig. The Niners passing game coordinator has reached a deal with the New Orleans Saints to become the team’s next offensive coordinator, according to NFL Media. This had been a move long speculated to happen following San Francisco’s playoff run and the Saints made quick work to secure him less than 24 hours after the conclusion of Super Bowl LVIII.

Kubiak, 36, had served as the 49ers’ offensive passing game specialist, one of the top assistant positions under head coach Kyle Shanahan. While Shanahan is generally credited as the mastermind behind San Francisco’s vaunted offense, which included a pair of MVP candidates in Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey this season, Kubiak is just the latest in a growing list of assistants to draw outside interest for their role in the 49ers attack. Mike McDaniel (now the Miami Dolphins head coach) and Bobby Slowik (Houston Texans OC) are recent Shanahan aides to warrant promotions, with Slowik holding Kubiak’s now former title in 2022.

It’s Confirmed, Dennis Allen Is Returning As Head Coach For The Saints

Posted by | January 17, 2024.

New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen said after the season that he expects to be back in 2024, telling reporters he wants to be “part of the solution” after a second straight non-playoff finish. On Wednesday, general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed Allen would in fact be back, calling his companion “a good coach” while comparing Allen’s record to the early-career marks of NFL legends like Bill Belichick, Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll and Tom Landry.

“As the head coach the last two years,” Allen explained after Week 18’s win over the Falcons, “(going) 7-10 (and) 9-8 is not what we aspire to be here. I have to do a better job. And I accept that responsibility.”

Allen’s Saints did finish 2023 strong, winning four of their last five, including Sunday’s 48-17 rout of Atlanta. But a 5-7 start, plus a key Week 16 loss to the Rams, left New Orleans on the outside of the NFC South and wild-card picture. The former defensive coordinator, who replaced Sean Payton atop the staff in 2022, is now 24-46 in his career as a head coach, dating to his time with the Raiders.

Dennis Allen Post Saints Season Press Conference

Dennis Allen gives his final 2023 season press conference with some important and much needed changes within the Saints organization.

Pink Slips Are Being Handed Out At The Saints Facility Today

Posted by | January 16, 2024.

New Orleans Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen announced that the team has parted ways with Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael, Senior Offensive Assistant Bob Bicknell and Wide Receivers Coach Kodi Burns.

Just after two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Burns is out, along with offensive coordinator and offensive assistant Bob Bicknell.

The Saints has decided to retain Dennis Allen as their head coach after a 9-8 showing in 2023 that brought his two-year record with New Orleans to 16-18.

“I would like to thank Pete, Bob and Kodi for their service to the New Orleans Saints and to this coaching staff,” Allen said in a release from the team. “These types of decisions are never easy to come to but are necessary as we move forward.

“I would especially like to thank Pete for his contributions to this staff for 18 seasons. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the job he has done and as a colleague.”

Carmichael came to New Orleans as the quarterbacks coach on Sean Payton’s original staff with the Saints in 2006. He became the offensive coordinator in 2009, when New Orleans won the Super Bowl, and stayed on the staff when Allen moved up from defensive coordinator.

Sources say more staff employees and players will be released of their duties in the days coming ahead. “These are not easy decions to make as they are life changing for the individual”

Rumor Has It, The Saints Are Preparing to Clean House Amid Troubled Locker Room

Posted by | January 10, 2024.

While the Saints are reportedly keeping Dennis Allen around — at least that’s the most recent rumor — his inability to keep his own players in check is a bad look at minimum, and perhaps more evidence that he can’t cut it as an NFL head coach.
Don’t tell the New Orleans front office that, though. Despite spending $125 million on a new quarterback and improving the defense last offseason, the Saints underachieved. The offense found their way near the end of the season, but it was too late. Players were fed up.

Winston has one foot out the door and is set to enter free agency. And while he took responsibility for his actions, it speaks to the greater issue of Allen’s leadership. Something like this never would’ve occurred in Bill Belichick’s locker room, I can assure you. Instead, Winston’s Saints teammates view the veteran quarterback as the leader they’ve been lacking.

“This man is the best teammate I’ve ever had,” Jimmy Graham said on X. “Loves this city, this game and embodies everything you can ask for in a leader. Was a rare situation and we all take responsibility. Nobody thought it would get blown out of proportion. Also [f—] the falcons.”

While I have no issue with the late-game score — if Smith had a problem with it, his defense should’ve made a stop — Allen’s quick apology suggests it’s not a move he would have made. The disconnect in New Orleans is obvious.

Sean Payton Is Coming Back To New Orleans

Posted by | January 8, 2024.

Unfortunately NOT to coach the Saints but to coach the Broncos when they play each other in the Big Easy. The biggest headliner on the 2024 campaign, the return of former Saints coach, Sean Payton, to New Orleans.

Free agency and the draft are unknown for the Black and Gold, but their 2024 opponents are already locked in.

Payton directed the Saints to a Super Bowl victory in 2009. In 15 seasons with New Orleans, Payton accumulated a 152-89 mark. The Who-Dats made the playoffs nine times under his watch.

Payton finished 8-9 in his first season with the Denver Broncos.

The Saints will be matched up with the NFC East and AFC West in 2024 scheduling

This will be an exciting matchup for sure.

Dennis Allen Expects To Return For The 2024 Saints Season

Posted by | January 8, 2024.

Dennis Allen is expected to remain the New Orleans Saints head coach in 2024.

Following a 9-8 campaign in his second season, Allen dismissed needing any assurances he’d keep his job, citing discussions with general manager Mickey Loomis about moving forward into the offseason.

“I don’t think there’s any need to discuss that further,” he said on Monday.

When asked if he feels confident he’ll be the Saints coach moving forward, Allen replied: “That’s the indication I’ve been given.”

The Saints went 7-10 in his first season and 9-8 in his second season. This not only shows improvement but is considered a “winning season”. Not many coaches get fired when showing improvement and having a winning season. Offensive staff changes are expected to be heavily evaluated and could look very different in 2024 however.

Saints leadership (meaning some combination of general manager Mickey Loomis, team president Dennis Lauscha, and owner Gayle Benson) don’t view Allen as “part of the problem in New Orleans.” Nor his quarterback. “The feeling is that too much blame is being placed on Allen and quarterback Derek Carr for the team’s struggles in 2023, and that Allen and Carr could be key components of a resurgence in 2024.”

So despite the frustrations from Saints fans and even some players, It looks as if we will see the Allen/Carr combo in black and gold next season.

Can Saints running backs Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller seize the moment in Week 18?

Posted by | January 6, 2024.

This season has not unfolded the way Jamaal Williams thought it would when he signed with the New Orleans Saints this offseason, but he has done his best to maintain the right attitude throughout.

His goal, he said, has been to be there for whatever his team asked him to do, and that has not very often meant carrying the football. Instead, he’s done some dirty work while he’s waited for his opportunity.

“I just try to do the best I can to be a great professional and have the mindset of always being ready no matter when,” Williams said.

That time might be now.

There is a solid chance that, when the Saints take the field for a crucial Week 18 game against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday, Alvin Kamara will be on the sideline in street clothes.

Derek Carr rebounds from a tough week as the Saints beat the Colts 38-27

Posted by | October 30, 2023.

Derek Carr spent the past week answering questions about his sideline demeanor.

New Orleans’ quarterback had nothing to apologize for Sunday.

Carr masterfully carved up Indianapolis’ young, depleted secondary, Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara scored two touchdowns apiece, and the Saints beat the Colts 38-27 to move into a share of the NFC South lead.

New Orleans (4-4) ended a two-game skid, and Carr got a chance to move past the criticism he took for scolding teammates and yelling at offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael during a Week 7 loss to Jacksonville.

Well, we know he was going to be a fan favorite and he did not disappoint. New Orleans Saints Sign Four Time Pro Bowler Derek Carr

Posted by | March 6, 2023.

Instead of the Big Apple, Derek Carr is heading to the Big Easy. The Saints are closing in on a four-year deal with the former Pro Bowl quarterback, according to NFL Media Monday.

Recent reports suggested that Jets were the frontrunners to land Carr. Yet the Saints, who had been in the running to acquire him from the beginning, managed to lure the offseason’s top available quarterback. Carr all but confirmed the news by Tweeting “Who Dat” late Monday morning.

Carr was benched this past year after having one of his best seasons to date in 2021. Despite an in-season coaching change and the arrest of receiver Henry Ruggs III, Carr still managed to throw for over 4,800 yards while completing over 68% of his passes during the 2021 season. His play that season helped the Raiders make the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

“I once said that if I’m not a Raider I would rather be at home and I meant that, but I never envisioned it ending this way,” Carr said via social media. “That fire burning inside of me to win a championship still rages. A fire no man can extinguish; only God. So I look forward to a new city and a new team who, no matter the circumstance, will get everything I have. Winning a championship is what I’ve always wanted and what I will continue to work towards.”
