New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Chargers: The starters get one last tune-up

Posted by | August 25, 2018 .

The first two preseason games are in the books. However, there hasn’t been much time to see the actual starters until tonight. Equally important, this is going to be the only chance till opening day to develop chemistry. The New Orleans Saints get a chance to see extended time for the first team.

All eyes are going to be on the Saints top pick Marcus Davenport. Davenport makes his debut tonight for the first time in live action. Just to refresh, the New Orleans Saints traded with the Green Bay Packers to move up to the 14th slot to pick Davenport. Also, they gave up a fifth round pick and the first round pick in 2019. Surely, there is high expectations for Davenport to come in and make an immediate impact.

Anything less than a stellar season will be disappointing. Is he ready, coming from a small school like Texas-San Antonio? Who Dat Nation hopes so. And the fans have reason to believe the front office knows what they are doing. Especially, with the success of the 2017 NFL Draft that landed Marshon Lattimore, Marcus Williams, Ryan Ramczyk, and Alvin Kamara. Every one of them has provided incredible first year results. Ramczyk was considered a shock at first from the Black and Gold. However, with the retirement of Zach Strief, he’s been a force on the offensive line.

Zach Strief has no doubt helped Ramczyk develop into a dominant offensive lineman to protect Drew Brees. Brees gets his first chance to make a few throws tonight too. The key for the offense in general will be developing a solid rhythm. Ironically, Brees makes his debut against his former team the Los Angeles Chargers. Both Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees remain close friends. “I like to think we–for those two years–brought out the best in each other. It was a great learning experiecne for both of us and I think we both got a lot better as a result of it,” Drew Brees said.

Brees still has a home in San Diego and remains in touch with his friend from the Chargers. Now, both of them face each other for a fascinating preseason game with expectations for both teams. Surely, both guys are going to want to outplay each other.
