The Famous Jim Mora Rant

On Oct. 25, 1987, Saints coach Jim Mora unleashed a post-game rant that still resonates with fans in the Crescent City to this day.

New Orleans outrushed San Francisco by over 100 yards and had 379 total yards but couldn’t muster an offensive touchdown in a 24-22 loss to the 49ers.

Trailling by two just before the two-minute warning, the Saints defense stuffed 49ers quarterback Joe Montana on a third-and-1 from the New Orleans 45 to force a punt.

The Saints offense was able to get Morten Anderson, who had already made five field goals on the day, an attempt at a 52-yard field goal to win the game but the try was wide left. He made field goals of 39, 49, 19, 19 and 37 while missing one from 51.

The Saints’ only touchdown came when Alvin Toles returned a blocked punt 11 yards in the fourth quarter.

Mora’s rant did spark the team however. The Saints rattled off nine straight wins – starting with a 38-0 beat down of Atlanta the following week and including a 26-24 win over San Francisco three weeks later – to finish the strike-shortened season 12-3 and earn the team’s first-ever playoff berth.
